]]>Likewise beware, you would be hard pressed to find any Registered Investment Advisors, Financial Planners or Annuity Salespeople who are truly unbiased, however, most will try to persuade you that they are in fact objective and unbiased. There are also many advisors that take a more balanced view toward securities and annuities and the roles they play to balance a retiree’s portfolio yet all of them will still have a unique bias based on education, training, experience, financial product availability and even at times their own self-serving motives…[continued below video]

Remember genuine referrals can be your best friend when choosing any advisor (warning; disregard written internet testimonials about advisors, many are fake).
Here is an good article by Ken Little that examines some of the pros and cons of each advisor type.
By Ken Little at About.com
Do you need the services of a professional financial adviser? Many people find that having a professional look at their total financial picture and bring it in focus is a valuable service.
As I discussed in part one of this two-part series, people often turn to financial advisers when they don’t have the time, energy or talent to manage a complex financial life.
If you think the services of a professional sound like something you could use, the next question becomes which type of adviser do you pick.
Generally, who can classify financial advisers two ways:
How they are Compensated
There are three basic ways you compensate financial advisers for their work. Each of the three methods has some good points and some weaknesses. In the end, you should choose the adviser you feel will do the best job for you and worry less about the method of compensation. The compensation methods are:
Fee Only
The fee-only adviser develops a comprehensive plan that lays out how you can reach your financial goals. However, it leaves the actual execution of the plan to you. The adviser doesn’t sell any products or services other than the plan itself.
The strong points of fee-only financial advisers are:
The weak points of fee-only financial advisers are:
Fee and Commission or Percentage of Assets
The second method of compensation of financial advisers includes a fee and commissions. The fee, which is usually substantially less than what a fee-only adviser would charge covers the cost of building the plan and commissions cover the cost of execution.
A variation on this compensation plan involves an annual fee based on a percentage of assets in your accounts. The fee compensates the adviser for monitoring your investments and making recommendations.
The strong points of fee plus commission advisers are:
The weak points of fee plus commission adviser are:
Commission Only
The third method of compensation is commission only. The financial adviser receives their only compensation from products they sell you.
I think you can see the inherent problem with this arrangement – it is in the adviser best interest to sell you something. A person who works on a commission only basis is a salesperson. [Read More…]

Despite the tough economic environment, annuity companies have continued to innovate and develop products that truly offer unique benefits and **guarantees especially in the areas of growth and income.
The proliferation of insurance companies working with investment companies to offer clients access to a variety of indexing strategies has really put growth back into the discussion when evaluating the hybrid style fixed index annuities. This innovation has created annuities with higher interest rate potential for people looking to take realistic withdrawals while having the potential to maintain their principal balance without having to take any market risk.
Many financial advisors have started utilizing this new class of annuities as a core allocation for their clients portfolios. It solves the issue for many retirees who need real growth but cannot afford to enter or remain in the securities market and suffer debilitating losses, negatively impacting their retirement lifestyle.
These are not your grandfathers annuities. This is a new class of annuities aimed at offering growth potential and income – all while protecting one’s core retirement dollars from loss.
If you have not heard much about these financial instruments, it might be time to ask some questions about what you can do for **guaranteed income while safely growing your retirement portfolio.

As Annuity Guys®, we know firsthand the benefits and peace of mind that clients enjoy when they know that their foundational income need is **guaranteed. Structuring a retirement portfolio to provide the highest level of secure and **guaranteed success should be goal number one for both clients and advisors.
Two choices: Probability-based or safety-first and both require open-mindedness from advisers
In the debate over whether it is better to base a retirement income withdrawal rate on predictable historical returns or one that focuses on basic retirement needs, it appears that the jury is still out.
“Do you want to focus on the probability of failure or the magnitude of failure?” said Wade Pfau, associate professor of economics at the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies.
Mr. Pfau, who has championed the conversation over new ways to manage a retirement income portfolio, presented his food for thought yesterday in Chicago at the InvestmentNews Retirement Income Summit.
The two schools of thought, as he explained them, include a “probability-based” approach of establishing a 4% withdrawal rate, and the “safety-first” approach that involves taking defensive measures to ensure that basic retirement needs are met.
The investment approach for the probability-based approach, for example, relies on systematic withdrawals and typically applies a total-return perspective.
In the safety-first approach, by contrast, the portfolio assets are matched to goals, and lifetime spending potential is the focus, as opposed to maximizing wealth.
In a model arranged as a pyramid, the bottom layer in the safety-first approach is dedicated to essential needs, followed by a contingency-fund layer, discretionary-expenses layer and finally a legacy fund at the top…. Investment News

]]>There are hundreds of insurance companies offering thousands of annuities — but how do you know which annuity is best for you? It’s really pretty simple. The best annuity is an annuity that fulfills your financial objectives. However, don’t be surprised if your best retirement annuity option includes a portfolio of traditional financial assets while simultaneously leveraging a few strategically selected annuities to meet your retirement income and growth goals.[Continued below video…]
**Guarantees, including optional benefits, are backed by the claims-paying ability of the issuer, and may contain limitations, including surrender charges, which may affect policy values. During this segment, Dick and Eric are referring to Fixed Annuities unless otherwise specified.
It’s your retirement and you typically only get one shot to do it right. So don’t be pushed or cajoled into a decision that you’re unsure fits your comfort zone and retirement objectives. Before you begin meeting with retirement planners or advisors, spend some time thinking about your income and retirement goals. If you don’t have an income or wealth transfer goal in mind, you will never accomplish it successfully and you will more than likely be disappointed with your results. Retirement portfolios often use annuities to achieve income goals by leveraging their growth with lifetime income **guarantees, yet retirees need to be specific with their needs so they do not over commit or come up short with this allocation.
Want even more information on picking the best annuity? Here is an article from AnnuityNews.com – on how advisors can assist their clients to solve their retirement income issues.
If you’re fairly new to the world of helping people prepare for retirement, here is something that may not be readily apparent. Financial professionals who offer a suite of diverse, well-structured annuity products that can be paired with optional lifetime income riders may be a boon to certain clients. In particular, the ideal clients for these annuity products are those who can benefit by shifting part of their product holdings from more traditional types of savings vehicles to income-producing vehicles. The process of determining which types of annuity products may be best suited to specific clients involves four primary steps.
We all know this, but let’s emphasize it: The first step in retirement planning or the sale of an annuity is to conduct a thorough assessment of the client’s current financial situation and potential future income needs. This assessment must be based on existing income, assets and expenses, as well as individual goals and circumstances. This first step also includes having the client estimate their projected expenses in retirement.
Then, you’ll want to calculate the client’s anticipated retirement income from all sources, including any part-time job; alimony; Social Security benefits; pension; 401(k) or other personal retirement plan; dividends from stocks, mutual fund^s, etc.; interest on savings accounts, bonds, certificates of deposit (CDs) and other financial instruments, and any other sources.
I’m not about to imply that all of those income sources should be removed from a client’s portfolio or that annuities should comprise more than an incremental part of any overall, balanced retirement program. However, today’s low-yielding vehicles may not be enough to help meet your clients’ needs. Now could be an opportune time to consider layering a single premium immediate income annuity (SPIA) or a single premium deferred income annuity (DIA) into a repositioned income strategy for the client.
We practice and recommend a "Holistic - OutCome Based Planning process when considering annuities." This approach has the effect of balancing your overall portfolio so you can meet your retirement objectives by "first identifying the least amount of your investments or savings (if any) that should be considered for annuities." ]]>The post Avoiding Annuity Income Rider Abuse! appeared first on Annuity Guys®.
]]>After all, as Annuity Guys, we often extol the virtues of income riders and the good they do; however, they are not always good for you! Annuity income riders typically offer benefits such as lifetime income and roll-up or ratchet growth **guarantees toward future income. Unfortunately, most of these **guarantees come at an expense and for some people this expense or rider fee makes perfect sense while foolhardy for many. Riders used correctly can give the annuity owner a lifetime income **guarantee that makes the expense well worth it. But, wait just a minute… [continued below video]
Guarantees, including optional benefits, are backed by the claims-paying ability of the issuer, & may contain limitations, including surrender charges, which may affect policy values. During this segment, Dick & Eric are referring to Fixed Annuities unless otherwise specified.
Where we typically see annuity income rider abuse is on fixed index annuities with riders using a formula for **guaranteed growth toward future income. Read that sentence carefully, notice that the **guaranteed growth is toward a “future income” using a formula and not **guaranteed growth in your cash or accumulation bucket. The abuse we typically see is from annuity salespeople who must not understand or believe that a fixed index annuity can offer important retirement benefits without misusing the rider’s dubious growth pitch.
So…
Some annuity agents find it easier to sell you an annuity by offering you a “6% to 8%” growth **guarantee. We refer to this as the lie of omission. If they tell you that your annuity has a “6%” **guarantee, most annuity purchasers believe that the 6% **guarantee is in their real money account value growth – but it’s not, and if questioned further they will even admit as much, but they hope you don’t ask. Remember using annuity income riders is not necessarily wrong, most help retirees accomplish future income goals that fulfill their income need for retirement.
In summary, know what you want your dollars to do for you in the future and ask enough questions to insure that the financial product you decide on will accomplish your goals and not an advisor’s commission goals! Hopefully, you can now avoid being a victim of “annuity -income rider- abuse.”

]]>It’s nice when empirical research validates something that we have observed and practiced for years with our financial planning clients.
Wade Pfau, a professor at American College who specializes in retirement income determined that based upon current market conditions a hypothetical couple ages 65 would have their best success for generating a four percent annual income by using a combination of…[continue reading below video]

We typically do not espouse an exact percentage, but rather design our income plans to cover the foundational expenses with sources like social security, pensions and annuities. If you take care of the foundation the flexibility with your additional assets can be significantly enhanced.
Check out more on the Death of the 4% financial planning withdrawal Rule.
The Wall Street Journal
Can your nest egg last your whole lifetime? It’s getting tougher to tell.
Conventional wisdom says you can take 4% from your savings the first year of retirement, and then that amount plus more to account for inflation each year, without running out of money for at least three decades.
This so-called 4% rule was devised in the 1990s by California financial planner William Bengen and later refined by other retirement-planning academics. Mr. Bengen analyzed historical returns of stocks and bonds and found that portfolios with 60% of their holdings in large-company stocks and 40% in intermediate-term U.S. bonds could sustain withdrawal rates starting at 4.15%, and adjusted each year for inflation, for every 30-year span going back to 1926-55.
Well, it was beautiful while it lasted. In recent years, the 4% rule has been thrown into doubt, thanks to an unexpected hazard: the risk of a prolonged market rout the first two, or even three, years of your retirement. In other words, timing is everything. If your nest egg loses 25% of its value just as you start using it, the 4% may no longer hold, and the danger of running out of money increases.
If you had retired Jan. 1, 2000, with an initial 4% withdrawal rate and a portfolio of 55% stocks and 45% bonds rebalanced each month, with the first year’s withdrawal amount increased by 3% a year for inflation, your portfolio would have fallen by a third through 2010, according to investment firm T. Rowe Price Group. And you would be left with only a 29% chance of making it through three decades, the firm estimates.
That sort of scenario has left many baby boomers who are in the midst of retiring riddled with angst. “The mind-blowing aspect of retiring is all these years you’re accumulating and accumulating, and then you need to start drawing down, and you have no idea how to do that,” says Al Starzyk, a 66-year-old retired printing executive in Williamsburg, Va.
So, if you can’t safely withdraw at least 4% a year from a balanced portfolio of equity and bond funds, what do you do? Here are three alternative approaches that retirement specialists say may work better to ensure your money lasts as long as you do:
Pairing the most plain-vanilla type of annuity—called a single-premium immediate annuity—with stocks, retirees can generate income more safely and reliably than if they use bonds for that piece of their portfolio, says Wade Pfau, a professor who researches retirement income at the American College of Financial Services in Bryn Mawr, Pa.
To arrive at that conclusion, he plotted how 1,001 different product allocations might work for a 65-year-old married couple hoping to generate 4% annual income from their portfolio. [Read More…]
We practice and recommend a "Holistic - OutCome Based Planning process when considering annuities." This approach has the effect of balancing your overall portfolio so you can meet your retirement objectives by "first identifying the least amount of your investments or savings (if any) that should be considered for annuities." OutCome Based Planning
analyzes and models multiple outcomes so you can clearly identify your best income and growth opportunities.
"The Annuity Guys will only call if you request help". Hence, when you are ready for specialized help we will be available."Working with an Experienced Fiduciary Financial Planner can help you Avoid a Trial & Error or Risk Based Retirement"
This type of approach does take considerably more time, effort and analysis which will show you mathematically the successful possibilities by comparing various outcomes rather than trying to sell or convince you of that "so-called one best solution." Clients frequently tell us that this process removes some of the confusion and emotion to help them objectively identify a better retirement plan; rather than just ending up with the most convincing salesperson or advisor.
When requesting help you can be assured of working with an experienced Annuity Guys' Retirement Planner who is independently insurance licensed and securities licensed as a fiduciary financial planner having access to the vast majority of annuity companies in helping you choose the best annuities using a holistic-outcome based planning approach. We consider the high quality advisor recommendations we make to our website visitors as a direct reflection back on our commitment to serve all client's with a high standard of excellence in financial planning for retirement.
Based on survey feedback on advisors from our website visitors, we eliminated about two-hundred local advisors and now only recommend a few that we consider experienced vetted Annuity Guys' Fiduciary Advisors. Many local advisors continue requesting us to recommend them as a vetted advisor. However, our reputation and future business is driven only by satisfied website visitors. So, unfortunately we've had to tell the vast majority of local advisors no, since we changed our business model four years ago. At that time we stopped trying to satisfy everyone with local advisors, we now primarily work with individuals who are comfortable using today's internet technology to their fullest advantage by working with a select group of vetted, experienced and knowledgeable Annuity Guys' Fiduciary Planners.
Are you willing to work with one of our retirement and annuity advisors based on their experience and expertise as a first priority rather than being limited by a local or regional area? The good news is that technology has forever eliminated our geographical limitations and leveled the playing field for everyone! As a result of today's technological advances, all of us can now work confidently with experts in any field including personal finance. We are no longer confined by regional or local boundaries limiting our choices and ultimate success. A high quality advisor is now as close as a click or phone call away.
"There is no room for trial and error when it comes to choosing MarketFree® Annuities or a Successful Retirement Planner."
"There are no undo buttons in retirement so it is vitally important that you do it right the first time!"
We are fortunate to have a select few who we believe are truly the highest qualified advisors out of about two hundred licensed insurance agents that we eliminated. Your survey feedback is what helps us make these tough decisions. Our advisors have an independent financial practice, specializing in annuities and retirement planning, which helps ensure that you are given the best options available for your retirement planning.

]]>Is the question/statement an outright lie? No, but it is one of the reasons so many people are confused about how annuities really work.
The five, six, eight, and even ten percent growth claims in the annuity world are most typically associated with a **guaranteed roll-up calculation that will be used to produce a payout number for a future lifetime income amount. Yes – that is a good thing and when annuities have been sold with the promise of producing a reliable future lifetime income, these calculations can be a valuable benefit. However, if a high return on your investment is expected based on these claims you will be disappointed.

In a prolonged low rate environment like we have been experiencing, it can be hard to just say NO when we hear some of these high rates of return that are not fairly explained. So, just be sure to clarify that the rate offered will generate an outcome that will meet your financial objectives.
The good news is that some annuity providers have seen the confusion that has arisen from these offerings; and are designing products that are easier to understand while prohibiting agents from using “unfair smoke and mirrors type marketing tactics” to produce more business.
Just remember what your mom always told you… “If it seems too good to be true, it probably is…”

]]>The post High Annuity Rates or High Annuity Ratings – Which is Best? appeared first on Annuity Guys®.
]]>Third party rating companies should play the dominate role in helping determine the claims paying ability of an insurance company for you as a consumer. So, just how much weight should be placed upon the rating alone is the $64,000 dollar question! Is it a good decision to chose a carrier or product based upon high ratings alone – or do high annuity rates and great consumer benefits play the determining role?
Guarantees, including optional benefits, are backed by the claims-paying ability of the issuer, and may contain limitations, including surrender charges, which may affect policy values. During this segment, Dick and Eric are referring to Fixed Annuities unless otherwise specified.
Insurance company ratings or current annuity rates, which “R” trumps the other? I don’t know about you but I’m hearing this question more than ever before. We all want to get the best annuity rate we possibly can for our clients but when the carrier rating is the trade-off, what is really best?
Such questions are even further complicated, in my opinion, by the fact that there are five major ratings firms (Standard & Poor’s, Fitch Ratings, A.M. Best, Moody Investors Service and Weiss Ratings) that issue financial strength ratings for insurance companies. Each one is slightly different and their rating categories can also differ, i.e., an A+ from one may not mean the same as an A+ from another and some don’t have an A+ rating at all. I don’t think anyone is saying that it’s easy to understand or easy to explain to a client but is it important? I, for one, think it is. Here’s why:
First, ratings should help us support our insurance carrier recommendations to our clients and their ultimate decision to buy protection coverage or invest in their future financial well-being. These ratings are from independent third parties whose evaluation should help all parties determine the ability of an insurer to fulfill its financial obligations. In addition, having multiple carrier ratings available can provide valuable comparison benchmarks.
Second, a company’s rating should be a barometer of its ability to pay claims. The higher the rating the more the independent third party rating firm, in their opinion, believes in the ability of the company to meet their on-going obligations. Simply put, a high rating indicates the company has the assets and reserves needed to pay claims. [Read More…]
