Everyone loves a good practical joke – until the joker happens to be the salesperson who just sold you an annuity and your retirement ends up as his or her punch line.

To help you figure out if your advisor is a “joker, amateur-salesperson, or a true experienced financial planner”, we have put together a list of red flags to look for… (continued below video)

Video: Dick & Eric Discuss… Some of the best ways to avoid a bad advisor experience!

 Guarantees, including optional benefits, are backed by the claims-paying ability of the issuer, and may contain limitations, including surrender charges, which may affect policy values. During this segment, Dick and Eric are referring to Fixed Annuities unless otherwise specified.

Be aware of these leading indicators and work with proven experts by referral whenever possible.
Gimmicks:

  • Sensationalism in marketing materials (the WOW Factor!!!)
  • 8% to 15% Secret Returns or Guaranteed Gains (not clarifying that this is neither interest, yield nor cash gains; rather it is an income payout percentage or a formulaic aspect of an income **guarantee)
  • I Hate Annuities (advertisements that are biased to sell securities)
  • Senior Alerts (to warn you about annuities when the real purpose is to sell you one!)
  • Free Reports (should say get a phone call from several annuity salesmen today)
  • Instant Quotes (should also say get a phone call from numerous annuity salesmen today)
  • Urgency to buy (way to much selling pressure)

Amateurs:

  • Talking product without a sound basis for recommendations (no in-depth questions about your situation)
  • Rely heavily on brochures (knows how to read)
  • Focus on generalities that are all positive (cannot think of any reason for you not buy)
  • Avoid tough questions lacking solid factual answers when asked (repeats simple benefits lacking detailed answers)

Charlatans’:

  • Present a too good to be true scenario (over the top opportunity, impossible to improve on, insider information)
  • Rush the sale (pressure, awkward, more pressure, expects the sale)
  • Create false sense of urgency (again insider information, limited time opportunity, everyone in the know is getting in)
  • Create an atmosphere of authority that is beyond questioning (makes you feel foolish or untrusting when you pose questions)
  • Lacks willingness in encouraging questions ( demands trust and wants you to trust based on their implied expertise by pointing out your lack of knowledge)
  • Typically focus on one or two high commission products; concealing their one size fits all mentality (Ask to talk to several clients see if they were all sold the same thing, hmmm)
  • Overly friendly and personable prior to the sale (beware of those who are mostly focused on getting to know you with little focus on the planning or products)
  • Unavailable and indifferent after the sale (oops… it is a bit late at this point, this is what you must avoid)

Here is an exerpt from the article – Here We Go Again: Annuities Promising 7 Percent Returns

It is too good to be true.

Understanding the **guaranteed returns takes time and perseverance.  From the products I’ve analyzed, the most common **guarantee involves two annually calculated values. The first is the actual value based on the underlying investment performance.  The second, or “**guaranteed value,” is increased by the predetermined return each year.  If the “**guarantee” is 7 percent per year, this value would, over a 10-year period, almost double the value for which you originally bought the annuity.

However, and this is a BIG “however,” you can not take the amount accrued over a 10-year period out of the annuity in a single lump sum.  You have to “annuitize” that value, meaning it must be paid out over the remaining years of your life (or some other time period).  When I calculated the advertised rate of return for one annuity claiming a “7 percent” **guarantee, I found that the rate of return paid out on the annuitized payments was less than 1 percent!  In total, the “**guaranteed return” was less than the current 10-year Treasury Bond yield … hardly a 7 percent **guarantee, and you paid some pretty hefty fees for the right to have it.

Another option offered by insurance companies allows investors to take a 4 to 6 percent payout every year for the rest of their lives instead of annuitizing.  Investors often confuse this payout with a **guaranteed return.  These are vastly different, as the former does not **guarantee the investment principal, which is still subject to investment risks. This type of approach does take considerably more time, effort and analysis which will show you mathematically the successful possibilities by comparing various outcomes rather than trying to sell or convince you of that "so-called one best solution." Clients frequently tell us that this process removes some of the confusion and emotion to help them objectively identify a better retirement plan; rather than just ending up with the most convincing salesperson or advisor.

When requesting help you can be assured of working with an experienced Annuity Guys' Retirement Planner who is independently insurance licensed and securities licensed as a fiduciary financial planner having access to the vast majority of annuity companies in helping you choose the best annuities using a holistic-outcome based planning approach. We consider the high quality advisor recommendations we make to our website visitors as a direct reflection back on our commitment to serve all client's with a high standard of excellence in financial planning for retirement.

Based on survey feedback on advisors from our website visitors, we eliminated about two-hundred local advisors and now only recommend a few that we consider experienced vetted Annuity Guys' Fiduciary Advisors. Many local advisors continue requesting us to recommend them as a vetted advisor. However, our reputation and future business is driven only by satisfied website visitors. So, unfortunately we've had to tell the vast majority of local advisors no, since we changed our business model four years ago. At that time we stopped trying to satisfy everyone with local advisors, we now primarily work with individuals who are comfortable using today's internet technology to their fullest advantage by working with a select group of vetted, experienced and knowledgeable Annuity Guys' Fiduciary Planners.

The good news is that technology has forever eliminated our geographical limitations and leveled the playing field for everyone! As a result of today's technological advances, all of us can now work confidently with experts in any field including personal finance. We are no longer confined by regional or local boundaries limiting our choices and ultimate success. A high quality advisor is now as close as a click or phone call away.

"There is no room for trial and error when it comes to choosing MarketFree® Annuities or a Successful Retirement Planner."
When you think about it, your money is almost always in some other state with a custodian; whether invested in the market or with an annuity insurance company, the advisors competence is primarily needed when positioning your money initially. So working with a specialized expert in a financial discipline like investments or retirement planning is imperative. There are no undo buttons in retirement! Once the annuities get set up correctly, it is customary and more efficient for owners to benefit by having direct access to the issuer instead of having to go through the agent. And, of course any reputable advisor, local or national, is more than willing to assist their clients if needed after they are implemented.

We are fortunate to have a select few who we believe are truly the highest qualified advisors out of about two hundred licensed insurance agents that we eliminated. Your survey feedback is what helps us make these tough decisions. Our advisors have an independent financial practice, specializing in annuities and retirement planning, which helps ensure that you are given the best options available for your retirement planning.

Why Searching for the Best Annuities on Your Own Can be so Frustrating...

Almost everyone nowadays turns to the internet for answers on everything - from buying new widgets to researching just about everything under the sun; and finding the best annuity is no exception! At first, it may seem that researching will be straightforward but the more time you spend researching them, the more frustrating it can be. Why is this? First of all, it does not take long to realize that gimmicks abound - such as warnings and alerts from salesmen who just want your attention so they can sell you one or the "too good to be true" claims of 8% to 14% **guaranteed interest and of course the claim that you can get the full market upside with no downside risk! If you have done any research you have heard all of these claims in advertising which are mostly half truths and not fully explained. So how can you find the best annuities on the internet? The truth is... you can't! And what is even more frustrating is all the conflicting points of view from so called experts. There are well over 6,000 different annuities - all designed for different reasons, so is it any wonder that the deck is stacked against the average researcher or do-it-yourselfer. Add to that the fact that they pay high enough commissions to attract a plethora of both good and bad agents. This does not make annuities good or bad; they are simply a financial tool that truly benefit those who use them correctly. How can you find the best annuities for your unique situation?
  • Use the internet cautiously;
  • Work with a vetted and experienced specialist;
  • Do not settle for that one dubious best plan. Compare multiple Outcome Based Plans to decide on the one that is truly best for you;
  • Be keenly aware of scare tactics and hyperbole - avoid those advisors and websites;
  • Avoid websites that are focused on rushing free reports, rates and quotes to get your contact information they are rushing you to speak with them, instead, take your time and choose someone you are more comfortable with that works on your time-table;
  • Know the Five Vital Factors (listed above) that an experienced specialist must answer before helping you select the best options for your situation;
  • Watch this telling video "Avoid Annuity Gimmicks, Amateurs and Charlatans"...

It’s important to differentiate what you need for retirement security versus what you would desire if all your investments go extremely well. Yes, we all would like to have high returns and phenomenal **guarantees associated with every annuity or investment but reality can at times be less than optimal.

A recent survey of near retirees who were contributing to their 401ks were asked how much they would have to contribute to an annuity to **guarantee $500 per month in income for the rest of their lives, starting when they were 65. The scary thing is that 96% of them answered incorrectly (to a multiple choice question)! The vast majority of those surveyed, 72 percent, believed that $25,000 would generate $500 per month for the remainder of their lives. ( By the way, the correct answer is closer to $100,000) [continued below video…]

Annuities utilized for securing income are excellent ways to create your foundational income. But you should not commit more to annuities than you need too. Unfortunately, if you don’t know what your foundational income need is you will be likely to fail miserably. No planner can hit the correct allocation number when he or she doesn’t even know the amount that’s needed for income.

So if you are ready to start retirement planning, take some time to find out how much income you will need to be comfortable.

Our Best Advanced Retirement Calculator below can get you started, however, ultimately you will want to work with an annuity income specialist who can help narrow down the best options for you!

Ready to become an industry insider? Here is a summary from InsuranceNews.Net that discusses the Cerulli report.

Consumer Confusion Begs for Advisors’ Direction on Annuities

By: Linda Koco

Cerulli analysts were struck by the naiveté they found in the answers to a survey of older 401(k) participants regarding retirement income expectations. Their conclusion produced an enlightening perspective on the need for advisor-sold annuities.

In 2013, the analysts posed the question to people age 55 and older who were active participants in 401(k) plans. Even though this study focused on retirement funds and variable annuities#, it was instructive for fixed annuity sellers. The respondents’ answers are valuable for any annuity seller, but they might also be important in considering the analysts’ conclusions about fee-based versus commission-based sellers.

The survey participants were asked to indicate the size of a one-time lump-sum premium they would hand over in order to receive $500 a month for life beginning at age 65. There was no mention of taxes, investment vehicle or feeds, the analysts said.

Would the participants hand over $25,000, $50,000, $75,000, $100,000 or $200,000?

(Before you read on – what would you guess?)

Survey Said!

The majority – nearly 72 percent – answered $25,000.

Coming in second place was $50,000, with nearly 18 percent of the group selecting this answer. Third place went to $75,000, chosen by nearly 6 percent of the group, and fourth place went to $100,000, with nearly 4 percent picking that answer.

The remaining answer – $200,000 – was selected by less than 1 percent of the survey participants.

The majority answer was pretty far off the mark. A $25,000 single premium immediate annuity “would most likely generate less than $150 per month for a 65-year-old female,” the Cerulli researchers said. And that assumed a single-life-only **guarantee.

Even when looking at the most aggressively priced products in that category, the same 65-year-old woman would most likely need to spend between $90,000 and $100,000 to generate $500 a month for life, without a death benefit **guarantee, they said.

This finding speaks to the complexity of annuities and the lack of awareness of how annuities function and the trade-offs that are involved, the Cerulli analysts continued.

“It also helps verify why annuities remain advisor-sold products and why less than 3 percent of variable annuity# sales were derived via the direct-to-consumer channel,” their report said.

Mixed Bag

The findings and conclusions drawn are among several points of interest in Cerulli’s new report, Annuities and Insurance 2013: Balancing Shrinking Supply and Increasing Demand for Guarantees. Those looking for an all-positive forecast for the annuity future will not find it in this report. The researchers present a mixed bag of potential annuity opportunities amid cautionary warnings, some with implications for advisors. [Article Out of Print]

Fixed index annuities, mutual funds^, and exchange traded funds (ETFs) could not possibly have very many things in common or could they? After all, the dyed in the wool investment guy wants you to think about securities or variable annuities and your safer money retirement planner keeps making a case to move some dollars into fixed or indexed annuities. Wouldn’t it be nice if both sides could simply work together. The better answer for most folks may be a blend of annuities and securities for a balanced portfolio and of course everyone needs a different blend to optimize their own retirement. So, that’s where a well rounded experienced advisor becomes essential. [continued below the video…]

Video: Dick and Eric discuss common and uncommon traits of index annuities, mutual funds and ETFs.

**Guarantees, including optional benefits, are backed by the claims-paying ability of the issuer, and may contain limitations, including surrender charges, which may affect policy values. During this segment, Dick and Eric are referring to Fixed Annuities unless otherwise specified.

One of the strongest commonalities among all these products is the level of complexity in choosing the best index annuity, mutual fund^ or ETF.  After all there are thousands of each of these financial products available. So how do you choose? The best way typically is by relying on an expert advisor who specializes in each of these areas. Financial advisors are compensated for helping you narrow the selections from hundreds or thousands of options to just a handful and then explaining why those selections are likely to be the better choices for your situation. Financial vehicle selection should never start with the product or investment – it should always start with an individuals financial objective and only then should a mutual fund^, ETF, or annuity become the solution to your problem. And more than likely, it will not be just one of those financial instruments but a combination in various allocations that can offer the greatest opportunity of success.

Fixed index annuities are often decried for their complexity, but mutual fund^s and ETFs can each have a prospectus totaling twice that of the annuity contract. In fact, FINRA and the SEC has described each of these as complex financial products that require a careful understanding before deciding upon any of these options.

Using OutCome Based Planning™ for Your Retirement

We practice and recommend a "Holistic - OutCome Based Planning™ process when considering annuities." This approach has the effect of balancing your overall portfolio so you can meet your retirement objectives by "first identifying the least amount of your investments or savings (if any) that should be considered for annuities." OutCome Based Planning™ analyzes and models multiple outcomes so you can clearly identify your best income and growth opportunities.

"The Annuity Guys will only call if you request help". Hence, when you are ready for specialized help we will be available.
"Working with an Experienced Fiduciary Financial Planner can help you Avoid a Trial & Error or Risk Based Retirement"

Selecting the Best Annuity & Retirement Income Advisor

Are you willing to work with one of our retirement and annuity advisors based on their experience and expertise as a first priority rather than being limited by a local or regional area? The good news is that technology has forever eliminated our geographical limitations and leveled the playing field for everyone! As a result of today's technological advances, all of us can now work confidently with experts in any field including personal finance. We are no longer confined by regional or local boundaries limiting our choices and ultimate success. A high quality advisor is now as close as a click or phone call away.

Video:"Choose a National or Local Advisor"?
Video:"Why These 3 Types of Annuity Advisors are Not Created Equal"
"There are no undo buttons in retirement so it is vitally important that you do it right the first time!"

"Anyone can sell you an annuity; however, it takes a truly qualified and experienced advisor to know how to structure them for income, inflation, growth, return of principal, and tax advantage. Typically, there is not just one that can accomplish all of these objectives. It is how an advisor structures multiple annuities in balancing your total portfolio that makes it possible to achieve your most important retirement objectives."

  • Use the internet cautiously;
  • Work with a vetted and experienced specialist;
  • Do not settle for that one dubious best plan. Compare multiple Outcome Based Plans to decide on the one that is truly best for you;
  • Be keenly aware of scare tactics and hyperbole - avoid those advisors and websites;
  • Avoid websites that are focused on rushing free reports, rates and quotes to get your contact information they are rushing you to speak with them, instead, take your time and choose someone you are more comfortable with that works on your time-table;
  • Know the Five Vital Factors (listed above) that an experienced specialist must answer before helping you select the best options for your situation;
  • Watch this telling video "Avoid Annuity Gimmicks, Amateurs and Charlatans"...

  ** Guarantees, including optional benefits, are backed by the claims-paying ability of the issuer, and may contain limitations, including surrender charges, which may affect policy values. Annuities are not FDIC insured and it is possible to lose money.
They are insurance products that require a premium to be paid for purchase.
Annuities do not accept or receive deposits and are not to be confused with bank issued financial instruments.

“Why can’t we all just get along?” It seems that the spirit of divisive partisan politics has invaded the investment world of annuities vs securities and more specifically fixed index annuities. For a myriad of reasons it seems many advisors end up in one camp or the other – loving or hating annuities while at times masking their true bias!

Investment broker types typically avoid or hate fixed index annuities but love promoting variable annuities# and other securities products. Insurance agents on the other hand love fixed index annuities and have little appreciation for variable annuities# or investing in securities… [continued below video]

Video: Annuity Guys®, weigh the “love-hate” annuity relationship in financial circles.

**Guarantees, including optional benefits, are backed by the claims-paying ability of the issuer, and may contain limitations, including surrender charges, which may affect policy values. During this segment, Dick and Eric are referring to Fixed Annuities unless otherwise specified.

[continued] …Brokers want to make a commission from selling you mutual fund^s or variable annuities# and then collect trail fees from their assets under management. Insurance agents typically make one commission from an insurance sale including annuities. There’s not really that much difference, so why is there so much animosity? They all want your money! That is how they get paid. Brokers and insurance agents want to get your money for their products or management since they are in serious competition for your assets.

Let’s face it, as the baby boomer generation enters retirement, more and more assets are moving from aggressive growth allocations into safer money options like annuities. Retirees face the challenge of turning their savings into lifetime income and they have to protect every dollar they can from the potential of market loss – yet many brokers don’t understand that mode of thinking.

They surmise that even if you lose 30% this year, you’ll hopefully be able to get it back in the next three to four years because that is how markets should work. Most brokers are accumulation specialists. They try to tell you the hot stocks and funds to buy but they don’t really know how to properly create a balanced portfolio that protects and grows assets while **guaranteeing a retirement income that you cannot outlive.

That being said, fixed index annuities are not the panacea for all your financial needs. They are wonderful for creating a secure income or providing reasonable safer growth  – but they are not securities and they should not be compared unfairly to them. Unfortunately, most consumers that are transitioning into retirement have been conditioned to think in terms of accumulation, so they are more comfortable using terms from what they have learned throughout years of “investing”. The transition into annuities for income, limited growth, and safety typically means learning to talk more about the safer return OF your money with reasonable growth – not the sizable returns ON your money that is left at risk.

Too many insurance agents try to talk like brokers and show off the “sizzle” of the 8% income rider growth formulas – even though it may not be the right annuity, it’s the easier “sell” because consumers can relate to the “growth **guarantees”. So annuities get the occasional black eye when they are represented incorrectly by miss-informed or at times bad advisors who don’t really understand the value of educating themselves or their clients about the proper use of annuities. They are definitely not the White Hat Good-Annuity Guys®, they pretend to be! In our humble opinion, your best advisor choice is to work with a Fiduciary Registered Investment Advisor having extensive experience with securities and annuities, who takes a balanced, holistic approach to retirement planning.

  • Use the internet cautiously;
  • Work with a vetted and experienced specialist;
  • Do not settle for that one dubious best plan. Compare multiple Outcome Based Plans to decide on the one that is truly best for you;
  • Be keenly aware of scare tactics and hyperbole - avoid those advisors and websites;
  • Avoid websites that are focused on rushing free reports, rates and quotes to get your contact information they are rushing you to speak with them, instead, take your time and choose someone you are more comfortable with that works on your time-table;
  • Know the Five Vital Factors (listed above) that an experienced specialist must answer before helping you select the best options for your situation;
  • Watch this telling video "Avoid Annuity Gimmicks, Amateurs and Charlatans"...

There has been quite a bit of news in the last year about annuity companies trying to “buy back” annuities they have **guaranteed. Check out this Wall Street Journal article on….

When to Surrender an Annuity

Your insurer may be trying to persuade you to sell your contract back.

Retirement-minded investors have snapped up hundreds of billions of dollars of variable annuities# with benefit **guarantees. Now some insurers are trying to persuade owners to walk away from their policies.

Variable annuities combine a 401(k)-like investment account with the equivalent of an insurance policy. They appeal to investors approaching retirement with a promise of **guaranteed regular payouts that could reset higher if the policy’s underlying investments fare well.

Yet the products usually have higher fees than plain-vanilla “immediate” annuities, which deliver an annual payout in return for a lump-sum payment. (Variable annuities are complicated enough—and consumers are confused enough about them—that the Securities and Exchange Commission issued an investor bulletin this month explaining how they work.)

Some insurers that sold products with rich **guarantees are trying to dissuade longtime customers from holding on to their contracts. In addition to offering to buy back variable annuities# with benefit **guarantees, insurers are limiting investment choices, raising fees and blocking additional account contributions.

The goal is to limit future payouts on accounts whose balances have tumbled at the same time ultralow interest rates hurt insurers’ own investment returns.

Insurers have sent out a flurry of letters in the past year informing annuity owners that their accounts are being shifted into more-conservative investment options—unless the owners opt out.

Michael Manon, a retired lawyer and entrepreneur who in March 2009 invested $120,000 in a variable annuity# with a **guaranteed-income rider, turned down an offer this month to sell the contract back to his insurer. His account is now worth more than $250,000.

“I still want the protection,” Mr. Manon says, pointing to the stock market’s January downturn as a reason why he values the **guaranteed payout.

He decided to turn down the buyout offer after consulting a financial planner with a specialty in counseling investors and advisers on the pros and cons of such annuities.

When should you consider getting out of an annuity with a **guarantee? If you aren’t seeking income as the main goal, if you have been diagnosed with a medical condition that severely shortens your life expectancy or if you have a dire need for a lump sum of cash, experts say.

Otherwise, consider holding on—as long as the contract still offers a broad range of stock investments, the income **guarantees are higher than what you could get for such a product if you bought it now, and you still want a steady income stream in retirement.

If you—or your parents—are holding an annuity and having second thoughts, here are some strategies to consider.

Stay aggressive.

Some insurers, including AXA Equitable Life Insurance, have sent letters to investors informing them that their assets would be shifted automatically from the growth funds they originally selected into lower-cost index funds, unless the investors opt out of the change.

“We were very clear that the offer was voluntary and that it may not make sense for everyone,” an AXA spokeswoman said. “But for some customers, their circumstances may have changed and it may make sense.” [.Read more…]

"There are no undo buttons in retirement so it is vitally important that you do it right the first time!"

Are you aware that the greatest number of consecutive days the Dow has ended with a gain is only 13? Since 1950 the S&P 500 has been up about 53% of the time and down around 47%; up heads, down tails.

We are not saying that your retirement has only a slightly better chance than a coin flip of success; but we are saying that with any investment in stocks, there is a risk that you could lose some of your principal. It is also obvious that with the markets, what goes up does come down – and fairly regularly even on upward trends. Unfortunately, this regular volatility makes it difficult for many retirees to sleep at night knowing that their retirement lifestyle is dependent upon the success of the market’s good days overwhelming the bad ones which is far from certain – especially in a retiree’s time horizon! [continued below video…]

Video: Annuity Guys, Dick and Eric compare stock and bond risk to the safety of annuities…

Guarantees, including optional benefits, are backed by the claims-paying ability of the issuer, and may contain limitations, including surrender charges, which may affect policy values. During this segment, Dick and Eric are referring to Fixed Annuities unless otherwise specified.

Consequently, we see retirees choosing less risky and less volatile options when they are near or entering retirement years. Historically, the experts have often said that stocks and bonds may give you your best chance at success in your golden years. Not so lately, according to a recent study by Dr. Wade Pfau which states your best chance for success in retirement is greatly enhanced with a blend of stocks and annuities!

So whether or not you are wanting to improve your chances for success in retirement or you are just looking to take some of your stock market earnings/winnings and “retain your gains”, it may be the perfect time to check out what an annuity can do for you.

Check out this US News article on the annuity versus bonds discussion.

Do You Need Bonds in Retirement?

New research considers ditching bonds in favor of stocks and annuities.

Traditional financial advice suggests you invest in a mix of stocks and bonds in planning for your retirement, and shift the mix more towards bonds as you age. The reason for this advice is that bonds tend to be less risky and have lower volatility than stocks, and are often counter-cyclical to equities. When stocks don’t perform well, bonds do, and vice versa.

Research in the 1950s by Harry Markowitz describes an “efficient frontier” to diversifying and trading risk for rewards. Basically, his research showed that there was a point at which you did not need to take on additional risk because the rewards you received for doing so did not justify taking on that extra risk. This research led to modern portfolio theory and much of the well-worn advice that financial planners trot out regarding investing in stocks and bonds.

Unfortunately, one mistake investors often make as they plan for retirement is failing to look beyond stocks and bonds, and take into account other sources of income when they make their investment allocations. However, new research by Dr. Wade Pfau, CFA, threatens to turn traditional advice about stock/bond allocations in retirement onto its head.

Dr. Pfau notes that people have two main goals in retirement: supporting lifestyle spending goals, or at least minimum spending needs, and maintaining a sufficient cushion of assets in reserve for unexpected expenses such as health issues, boomerang kids, and emergency repairs. Since most people do not have enough retirement savings to comfortably meet both goals, they have to make a trade-off between one or the other—more income or more assets.

While he doesn’t claim to allow people to have their cake and eat it too, Pfau suggests that it is possible to get more income in that tradeoff. His research suggests that, instead of investing exclusively in stock and bond allocations, people will be better off in investing in a combination of stocks and fixed annuities while avoiding bonds altogether.

You read that correctly. His research suggests not investing in bonds at all. The paper shows that people have their income spending needs met more fully by buying single premium immediate annuities (SPIAs) and then investing the remaining assets in stocks.

I was intrigued. My grandparents used to buy me Series EE savings bonds for my birthday as a way to save and invest. I had to cash them in to pay for repairs when my car managed to find its way into Mr. Kimble’s passenger side door in high school, but boy, was I glad I had them. Surely bonds were part of any well-diversified portfolio, weren’t they?

Fortunately, Dr. Pfau was kind enough to spare me some time for an interview. Some highlights:

Dr. Pfau conducted a Monte Carlo analysis of 1,001 combinations of stocks, bonds, SPIAs, and variable annuities#. In every case, the best outcomes for maximizing income and remaining assets came from an allocation of stocks and SPIAs. Based on these findings, Dr. Pfau asserts, “there is no need for retirees to hold bonds.”

Annuities are like bonds with benefits. With a bond, you’re going to receive a set amount of income payments over a fixed period of time and then receive your principal back. With a SPIA, you’ll get a given amount of income payments for the rest of your life, but you get no principal back. Annuity providers use actuarial data to determine how much to pay you because a given percentage of people die each year. If you’re a 65-year-old male, then, on average, you’ll live another 17 years. So, the annuity provider can make payments as if you’d live another 17 years. However, some people will die earlier, and some will die later. If you die later, you have beaten the house and you get more money, but if you die earlier, the house wins. Because of this pooling of risks, annuities can pay a higher percentage return, and the trade-off is that you don’t get the money back at the end. If you’re looking to meet income needs, then this is a great way to meet your goals because you can get more income for the same dollar.  [Read more from US News…]

  • Use the internet cautiously;
  • Work with a vetted and experienced specialist;
  • Do not settle for that one dubious best plan. Compare multiple Outcome Based Plans to decide on the one that is truly best for you;
  • Be keenly aware of scare tactics and hyperbole - avoid those advisors and websites;
  • Avoid websites that are focused on rushing free reports, rates and quotes to get your contact information they are rushing you to speak with them, instead, take your time and choose someone you are more comfortable with that works on your time-table;
  • Know the Five Vital Factors (listed above) that an experienced specialist must answer before helping you select the best options for your situation;
  • Watch this telling video "Avoid Annuity Gimmicks, Amateurs and Charlatans"...

We’ll just give it to you straight – some annuities pay high commissions and some of them have high annuity fees. Now that we have those unpleasant facts in the open, let’s figure out if this makes annuities a good or bad choice!

When it comes to a properly designed retirement plan, does it matter what you pay if you’ve hit all your financial targets and fulfill all your income needs? Of course it still matters – nobody wants to overpay, but most people do not have trouble paying a fair price for good financial instruments or planning and assistance. When it comes to annuities 99 percent of them are…[continued below video]

Video: Watch as Annuity Guys Dick and Eric elaborate on the inside story about fees and commissions!

 Guarantees, including optional benefits, are backed by the claims-paying ability of the issuer, and may contain limitations, including surrender charges, which may affect policy values. During this segment, Dick and Eric are referring to Fixed Annuities unless otherwise specified.

[continued]…sold by advisors or agents who will earn commissions. Unfortunately, this means that as a consumer you have to be wary of the unscrupulous insurance agent who sells you an annuity just to earn a commission; not because it was the right product or financial instrument to meet your planning goals. Good advisors are not afraid to share with you a variety of annuity options that may be worth consideration to help you meet your retirement goals – irregardless of what commission they may earn.

Early in life, my mother told me “You get what you pay for.” I think that was her way of telling me that if you always buy the cheapest option you might not be wise.

The same can be said of annuities. You get what you pay for and some annuities will cost you more. Fees on annuities are typically tied to benefits. The most common fees we discuss are the income rider fees that are added onto fixed and fixed index annuities to provide clients an opportunity to have lifetime income **guaranteed without having to annuitize.

Unfortunately, the media loves to focus on variable annuities# when it comes to discussing fees… as well they should; however, they tend to go one step to far and lump all annuities into the same category. After all variable annuities# usually have the largest and most costly fees for the benefits they provide. They also place the insurance company at the biggest potential risk. Variable annuities allow your principal account balance to rise and fall with the markets; however, most VAs have riders that **guarantee future income and death benefits. So, if the account balance has dropped and the company is on the hook for a significant portion of lost account value the only way they can cover the potential losses are with fees – lots and lots of fees.

Are the fees worth it? Some, definitely. Just be wise high fees can truly be detrimental. If your goal is to protect your retirement income, are you willing to give up something for a certain level of protection? If you answer yes to that question, then reasonable fees should be worth it.

Looking for more information on annuity fees and commissions, you may want to check out this article.

Can I Buy Annuities With No Fees or Surrender Charges?

Question: Can I buy annuities with no fees or surrender charges? Are there no load annuities like no load mutual fund^s?  Ron in Roanoke, Virginia.

Answer: Phenomenal question Ron!  The annuity industry is very late to the party when it comes to “no load” type offerings that are common in the mutual fund^ industry.  No load can mean a few things.  It can refer to no fees for buying a strategy, no fees to keep the strategy, and no fees to sell the strategy.  Let’s cover all 3 as they apply to annuities, and the one annuity that covers all of these issues.

No fees to buy an annuity

Here’s where agents blur the lines when it comes to fees and commissions.  All annuities build in the agent’s commissions into the annuity so that you will see 100% of your money go to work. Regardless of the type of annuity (immediate, indexed, variable, fixed, etc.), for example….if you put in $100,000, you will see $100,000 go to work.  Just be aware that this doesn’t mean that the agent didn’t get paid.  They did!

No fees to keep an annuity

Some agents might tell you that fixed rate annuities, or indexed annuities have no annual fees, and technically they are correct if these annuities are bought with “no extras.” However, most deferred annuities are sold with attached benefits (also called riders), which always come with an annual fee for the life of the policy.  Single Premium Immediate Annuities and Longevity Annuities (aka: Deferred Income Annuities) have no annual fees, but provide little or no liquidity.

No fees to sell an annuity

Here’s where the rubber meets the road, and where the annuity confusion starts in some cases.  The majority of annuities sold today are deferred annuities.  With deferred annuities, there are surrender charges to get your money out of the product.  For example, if the surrender charge on an annuity was 7% and your accumulation (i.e. walk away) value was $100,000……..you would receive $93,000 if you fully surrendered the policy.  In my opinion, surrender charges are “fees” and should be considered when making an annuity buying decision.  If you sell a deferred annuity that is past its surrender charge, then there are no fees to sell.  But if you sell your 10 year deferred annuity in year 5, then you will be charged a fee to sell.  Always remember, surrender charges are fees.  As a caveat to this issue, Single Premium Immediate Annuities and Longevity Annuities are not “sellable” strategies and in turn have no surrender charges……but also no liquidity.  If you are considering these 2 types of annuities, make sure that your money is allocated properly and you do not need to access the funds lump sum.

As advisors who specialize in retirement planning one of the first questions we discuss with clients surrounds the subject of  liquidity. We need to insure that our clients are equipped for whatever financial challenges life may present them with and sometimes that means needing access to some cash quickly.

So are annuities liquid financial vehicles? Can annuities be converted to cash? Maybe — depending on the type of annuity and the timing, some annuities can be converted to cash quickly. There is really a scale of liquidity from liquid to illiquid across various annuity types with immediate annuities being illiquid while variable, fixed and hybrid annuities offer many opportunities to access cash with no penalties.

**Guarantees, including optional benefits, are backed by the claims-paying ability of the issuer, and may contain limitations, including surrender charges, which may affect policy values. During this segment, Dick and Eric are referring to Fixed Annuities unless otherwise specified.

In a March 2012 article in Insurance News, “Debunking Annuity Objections” Sheryl Moore an objective industry expert addresses the topic of annuity liquidity. Sheryl does an excellent job articulating just how insurance companies keep annuities secure by purchasing high quality bonds whose maturities coincide with the surrender period for the purchased annuity. In addition insurance companies must also have reserves set aside that are determined by the state insurance commissions as adequate. Consequently, if an annuity is redeemed early the insurance company may be required to redeem the underlying bonds prior to maturity resulting in a financial loss to the insurance company. So as a safeguard to their financial stability the insurance companies include surrender charges to maintain their continued viability and safety for all clients involved.  Since annuities have to be reliable as long term financial vehicles for retirement, surrenders cause people to think twice before bailing out unless it is absolutely necessary, thus protecting others that remain.

It should be pointed out that cashing out an annuity is not the only way to obtain liquidity. Virtually all non – immediate annuities provide for a portion of the annuity that can be withdrawn each year without penalty – and for most annuities this amount is 10 percent of the value of the annuity annually. In addition, it is typical for annuities to provide for access to funds without penalty should the annuitant be confined to a nursing home, disability or being diagnosed as being terminally ill.

In addition, all annuities offer the option of annuitization **guaranteeing a lifetime income and most annuities pay the account value to the beneficiaries upon the death of the annuitant.

If you use an annuity or series of annuities in your retirement planning understanding how you can get access the account value should be part of the conversation with your advisor. Just know that a full pre-mature surrender is not the best or a preferred option for most annuity owners. A very small percentage of annuities are surrendered in full prior to maturity.

Annuity Guys® Video Transcript:

Eric: today’s topic is annuities, are they liquid or not?

Dick: Yeah, can we put our money into these? Are we going to lose our money or how long is it going to be gone for? How does this work, Eric?

Eric: How big is the vault that you have to put that in? Can you get into the vault? When we start talking about liquidity, and it’s one of the first questions we are typically asked or actually, we address with clients, because annuities typically are long-term.

Dick: They are. They’re long-term retirement vehicles and you shouldn’t look at them as your liquid money, even though there may be liquidity there.

Eric: Right, each type of annuity has kind of a different level of liquidity.

Dick: So let’s talk about first of all, the annuity that has no liquidity.

Eric: I was going to say medium, minimal, yeah, I always give you the little caveat there.

Dick: Minimal, there’s some liquidity there.

Eric: With an immediate annuity, you’re going to take your liquid asset really, and you’re going to give it to the insurance company in exchange for an income stream. So the problem is that lump sum is gone now, if you had to go out and salvage it, if you really think about it.

Dick: Get something out of your annuity.

Eric: You could sell it on the secondary market. You’re going to get pennies on the dollar.

Dick: It wouldn’t be a good idea, unless you really have to.

Eric: That would be a last ditch.

Dick: Effort.

Eric: Uncle Joey’s in prison, I don’t know.

Dick: Let’s not go there.

Eric: I was going to say, so just don’t even consider it as part of being sound financial planning.

Dick: Make a good plan and then you won’t need to cash that immediate annuity in.

Eric: That’s right.

Dick: Let’s talk about some annuities that are more liquid or considerably more liquid. Go ahead.

Eric: The next level is really that fixed, indexed hybrid, which is all built on that kind of fixed annuity chassis.

Dick: Fixed annuity chassis, right.

Eric: The best part about most of those and this is a typical aspect; you’re going to get a 10% after that first year. Your first year is usually for some, it’s 5.0%, for some it’s no withdrawal that first year, but typically, after that point in time you’re able to withdraw 10%.

Dick: At least by the second year, the 13th month you can take 10% out, and the beauty of that is that there’s no penalty and there’s no surrender.

Eric: So it’s actually some liquidity of what you’ve deposited. Some do it based on the account value. Some do it based off of the original deposit.

Dick: Right. So when we’re looking at this type of liquidity, again 10% is a long ways from 90% or 100% of what you actually put into the annuity, yet the idea of liquidity in an annuity is that, when you structure your financial plan properly, you’re not looking for liquidity with an annuity. That’s not the purpose of that money.

Eric: Right. Annuities are geared towards income, you know, or savings?

Dick: Or safety and giving money back to heirs.

Eric: You should know there are ways to get access to some of that cash, if you need it. But just knowing how you’re structuring your whole plan allows you to safeguard those places.

Dick: You know we talk about 10% but then there are some other provisions in an annuity, because folks, these annuities really are true retirement vehicles, and so the annuity companies look at these and say well, what would be a real emergency, a real liquid need perhaps in retirement, and one would be terminal illness. Another would be a long term care need and those all have some provisions for liquidity.

Eric: I was going to say, most annuities have those pieces built in.

Dick: You get all your money back with no penalty or surrender.

Eric: Obviously, the one that we never like to even mention necessarily, because it’s really not liquidity for you, but it’s liquidity for your heirs if you would pass, all that account value would move on to your heirs.

Dick: That’s important to know, because I have frequently sat down with someone who was just investigating annuities initially, and did not understand that those penalties and surrenders are not passed on to heirs. They get the full account value including bonuses, and there are no penalties. No surrenders.

Eric: It is a strength in the annuity system, in the sense of being able to purchase something. You may have gotten a bonus or something right up front. Those things typically, if you would pass even the second day you’ve owned it, that full account value moves on to heirs.

Dick: Now, Eric a lot of people would see this as being very counterintuitive, because I am going to make a statement here, and that statement is simply that surrenders can actually be good, and there’s a reason why surrender charges. Now, Eric says, no, never. Eric, it depends on which side of the fence you’re on.

Eric: That’s right.

Dick: If you’re the person wanting to get some money out, then you think surrenders are bad. On the other hand, if you’re the person that’s got your money long-term in an annuity, and it’s supposed to accomplish your retirement, you don’t want other people pulling their money out prematurely.

Eric: That’s correct. When you understand how insurance companies reserve for annuities and how they’re constructed, you want your company that you’re doing business with to be financially stable.

Dick: Very secure. Remain viable.

Eric: And how these annuities are constructed is once you purchase an annuity, that insurance company is going to take those dollars, and typically run down to the investment bond market.

Dick: Treasuries.

Eric: Buy high-quality bonds.

Dick: Right.

Eric: And that’s what they use to reserve your annuity. Now why is that important? If the insurance company has to go sell some of those underlying bonds early, because you’ve surrendered prior to your maturity time, they’re going to have to sell those bonds on the open market.

Dick: Perhaps take a hit and this is what some of that surrender charge offsets, but it also makes you take pause and think twice before you go cash in an annuity.

Eric: That’s where you look at it as being the surrender fees are actually part of the overall construct of the insurance companies that help them protect the system. It helps protect the entire, basically industry and what you’re protecting the people…

Dick: Ultimately, it protects the people that are insured. They’re relying on their annuity for their retirement.

Eric: So that’s where he is saying it’s a good thing, if you’re trying to get to the liquidity aspect.

Dick: Now another thing that I find very interesting that gets overlooked a lot of times is folks will think, well once that surrender period ends, which is in 10-years and that must be the end of my annuity, but it’s not. No, that’s where you now have full liquidity. You have full control over your money, but they still have contractual obligations to you.

Eric: That’s right.

Dick: When you set up the annuity originally.

Eric: That’s the key thing. The word annuity, typically in my mind, means lifetime. Once you start it, you’re into a lifetime contract. You can decide at some point…

Dick: To end it early, to walk away.

Eric: But you’ve, basically you’ve got a commitment.

Dick: You’ve got them on the hook. That’s what your contractual **guarantees do.

Eric: That’s right. The other thing we didn’t talk about as far as, another way of getting liquidity with an annuity is obviously, annuitization, any annuity can be annuitized. What does that mean? Basically, it means you’re turning it to into a lifetime income stream.

Dick: So you’re really setting a fixed annuity into what would normally be called an immediate annuity, if you purchased it right off the bat, and wanted an income stream. What we found to be very popular lately has been the hybrid annuity. The idea of the hybrid annuity is it’s kind of like you’re having your cake and eating it too. Where you can have your lifetime income, but in addition to that you’ve still have got your asset.

Eric: Dick likes to talk about this, so I’m going to put him on the hook. We talk about majority control, a lot of the times with hybrid annuities, especially. You want to kind of explain a little bit about what—when you talk about majority control.

Dick: When you first start out with an annuity obviously there are surrender charges and the surrender charges are higher in the earlier years. But even in the worst case scenario as a rule, when you subtract the bonus out, because let’s face it, if a company gives you a bonus for putting your money with them, if you take your money out early they want their bonus back. They want their money back.

So when we say majority control, that surrender charge kind of in its worst case is about 10%. So that means you literally control 90% of your principal and then you have a decreasing surrender charge over the years. So you continue to gain a higher and higher majority, until you have 100% majority control, and yet you still have contractual **guarantees that that company has to honor. So this is what we say majority control, which is the opposite with the immediate annuity, because with the immediate annuity, you’ve given up your lump sum and you have no more control over your asset. Did I do a good job?

Eric: That was it. Thank you. I think that helps people a lot of times, because when you’re thinking about, especially with liquidity if you’re looking at a hybrid annuity, really you have to understand, for the most part unless it’s a really weird contract, you’ve got at least 90% control of all the dollars from day one.

Dick: Exactly.

Eric: And so it’s a good way of thinking about it, because I’ve seen the market take a 10% dive and you lose 10% over a period of time.

Dick: Right, sure. Absolutely, and we know that that’s the beauty of an annuity is it gives you that security and safety, and it takes the volatility away of the market, and so for at least a portion of the portfolio we recommend a lot of times that that’s the foundational portion of the portfolio.

Eric: So I guess to try to sum up this topic, we would say just know that when you’re going into the annuity market that one, you’re going to have majority control in situations, and also know there is more than one way to get access to your dollars.

Dick: Yes, there are and as we kind of hinted, it’s important to not think in terms of well, taking all of my money out of the annuity at one time, but taking a 10% or what you really need, and that when you structure that annuity originally that you structure it as a long-term portion of your portfolio. Okay, folks, hopefully we’ve covered liquidity and annuities and I’m sure there is more that we could say, Eric.

Eric: Liquid or not?

Dick: Have we said enough today? We never know how to wind these up.

Eric: Ending is always the hardest part.

Dick: Thank you for watching.

Eric: Have a great day.
