The investment approach for the probability-based approach, for example, relies on systematic withdrawals and typically applies a total-return perspective.

In the safety-first approach, by contrast, the portfolio assets are matched to goals, and lifetime spending potential is the focus, as opposed to maximizing wealth.

Can your nest egg last your whole lifetime? It’s getting tougher to tell.

Conventional wisdom says you can take 4% from your savings the first year of retirement, and then that amount plus more to account for inflation each year, without running out of money for at least three decades.

This so-called 4% rule was devised in the 1990s by California financial planner William Bengen and later refined by other retirement-planning academics. Mr. Bengen analyzed historical returns of stocks and bonds and found that portfolios with 60% of their holdings in large-company stocks and 40% in intermediate-term U.S. bonds could sustain withdrawal rates starting at 4.15%, and adjusted each year for inflation, for every 30-year span going back to 1926-55.

Well, it was beautiful while it lasted. In recent years, the 4% rule has been thrown into doubt, thanks to an unexpected hazard: the risk of a prolonged market rout the first two, or even three, years of your retirement. In other words, timing is everything. If your nest egg loses 25% of its value just as you start using it, the 4% may no longer hold, and the danger of running out of money increases.

If you had retired Jan. 1, 2000, with an initial 4% withdrawal rate and a portfolio of 55% stocks and 45% bonds rebalanced each month, with the first year’s withdrawal amount increased by 3% a year for inflation, your portfolio would have fallen by a third through 2010, according to investment firm T. Rowe Price Group. And you would be left with only a 29% chance of making it through three decades, the firm estimates.

That sort of scenario has left many baby boomers who are in the midst of retiring riddled with angst. “The mind-blowing aspect of retiring is all these years you’re accumulating and accumulating, and then you need to start drawing down, and you have no idea how to do that,” says Al Starzyk, a 66-year-old retired printing executive in Williamsburg, Va.

So, if you can’t safely withdraw at least 4% a year from a balanced portfolio of equity and bond funds, what do you do? Here are three alternative approaches that retirement specialists say may work better to ensure your money lasts as long as you do:

Use annuities instead of bonds

Pairing the most plain-vanilla type of annuity—called a single-premium immediate annuity—with stocks, retirees can generate income more safely and reliably than if they use bonds for that piece of their portfolio, says Wade Pfau, a professor who researches retirement income at the American College of Financial Services in Bryn Mawr, Pa.

To arrive at that conclusion, he plotted how 1,001 different product allocations might work for a 65-year-old married couple hoping to generate 4% annual income from their portfolio. [Read More…]

According to Kiplinger, only about 8 percent of Americans get any sort of retirement income from private annuities, even though there are some definite benefits to owning one.

The problem might be the misconceptions surrounding them. If you don’t go in with your eyes open, an annuity could be the worst financial decision that you ever made. But if you know what you’re buying and manage it the right way, it’s . Often for life, and sometimes for the life of you or your spouse if one of you dies.

Maybe it’s not a question whether or not, but how to use an annuity.

Mistakes seem to be the real culprit, and not the annuities themselves. It’s been said before. Annuities, and really any retirement financial vehicles, are tools. There’s a right way and a wrong way to approach them.

And here are 5 of the top mistakes that you can avoid:

#1: Ignoring the Costs

Costs vary with annuities, depending on where you buy them. The Motley Fool‘s Todd Campbell ranks this annuity mistake as #1, particularly because it can cost you now, later, and for the life of the annuity.

Annuities are profitable for brokers because the fees are so much higher than other investments, says Campbell. Commissions can be as high as 10 percent, on top of other related expenses. But it’s avoidable if you ask up front and shop around for the best rates. You don’t have to buy an annuity from a broker. Steve Vernon for CBS Money Watch says that you can buy immediate annuities through online annuity shopping services, and variable ones through companies such as Vanguard.

#2 Choosing the Wrong Annuity

You wouldn’t buy a subcompact vehicle if you had 5 kids, and buying the wrong annuity is just as shortsighted. Vernon explains that there are four basic annuity choices: Fixed dollar amount, inflation-adjusted, variable, **guaranteed minimum withdrawal benefit, and **guaranteed lifetime withdrawal benefit.

With each choice comes a set of pros and cons. For example, a fixed-rate annuity gives you a set rate of return. That might sound great until you think about inflation, which this type of annuity doesn’t do. Variable annuities have a variable rate of return, but that means it can go up or down because they’re usually backed by mutual fund^s, says Campbell. Learn as much as you can about your choices before you commit and you won’t have surprises on down the road.

Don’t cheat yourself by taking too much.

#3 Taking Extra Withdrawals

With a **guaranteed annuity, you’ll have a set percentage that you can withdraw, or take in distributions, each year. It might be 5 percent, but you could take more, at least with some annuities, if you wanted to. That’s a bad idea, according to Kiplinger, because it can slash your **guaranteed value.

If you withdraw your set percentage, your **guaranteed annuity value will remain untouched for the life of the annuity. But if you take just a few thousand dollars more than you should, and you only do that once, your **guaranteed value will reduce, and so will all of your future distributions for life.

#4 Not Naming Your Spouse as Beneficiary

If you’re married, a joint-life annuity makes sense for you and your spouse. But you also need to name your spouse as primary beneficiary. There’s a difference, and it can be a major one.

With a joint-life annuity that names an IRA as beneficiary, your spouse would only get the actual value at your death. That’s what you invested, less what’s already been paid to you. With a joint-life annuity that names your spouse as beneficiary, the same regular payments would continue as before, for the rest of your spouse’s life. Depending on when this happens, that could add up to a lot of money.

#5 Not Considering an Annuity At All

Perhaps the biggest annuity mistake is to not evaluate annuities as part of your retirement plan at all.

Would you allow your general practitioner to perform heart bypass surgery on you in their office? Since, after-all, he or she is your trusted doctor who has helped you through many belly aches and sore throats, kept your blood pressure in check, and monitored your good health, you trust them!

You might think this analogy a little over the top but some investors do allow their “general financial practitioner” who helped them grow their retirement accounts to now perform “financial bypass surgery” on their life’s savings by creating their critically important retirement income plan. Advisors who specialize in asset growth often have a difficult time transitioning out of asset accumulation mode due to their lack of; income planning knowledge/training, guaranteed** income options, experience, and even potential conflict of interest quotas imposed on them by their broker/employer to sell investment products that are more risk oriented!

Retirement Savings = Delayed Spending

If your goal for accumulating dollars during your working years is to provide you with an income for the rest of your life in retirement, there should be a gradual change to a point where you significantly reduce risk and put in place a strategy for a secure lifetime income.

Since annuities do provide lifetime income **guarantees, annuities should at least be sincerely considered in the retirement income conversation. Unfortunately, many growth oriented advisors have not worked in this space and choose to ignore or denigrate annuities and the advisors who use them (annuities).

Some advisors are selfish. If you asked your growth oriented advisor for a referral to an advisor who specializes in retirement income, I would bet 90 percent would start babbling about how they can do this with the proper mix of stocks, bonds and alternative investments or their limited access to a few annuities they are allowed to offer you. Remember, it’s your money and you are relying on them for their expert advice; and if you’re not completely comfortable with their strategy for accomplishing your income goals, get a second opinion from a retirement income specialist.

Like all kids, I couldn’t wait for school to end and summer to arrive. The thing that I looked forward to growing up in New Jersey in the ‘60s was going to day camp. This was an opportunity to meet new friends, swim, and play lots of different sports for two months each year.

One of the activities I enjoyed was tetherball. For those who may not be familiar with this sport, allow me to give you a brief overview. The equipment is simple, consisting of a volleyball hanging from a rope, or tether, that’s attached to a stationary metal pole. Two players stand on opposite sides of the pole, hitting the ball in opposing directions. The game ends when one player wraps the ball all the way around the pole so that it’s stopped by the rope.

Ever since I began specializing in retirement income planning, I’ve seen the tetherball visual surface from time to time. It was inspired recently while I was reading an article, “Advisor Retirement Product Picks Vary By Channel, Survey Says,” in Financial Advisor magazine. The article cited a study by Cogent Research that concluded that the specific retirement income products offered to clients are dependent upon their investment adviser’s particular “channel,” i.e., their bias.

The study found that broker-dealer advisers are far more likely to recommend products offered by insurance companies, such as variable annuities#. Registered investment advisers, or RIAs, on the other hand, lean toward investment products offered by a mutual fund^ company. Finally, the study found that independent and wire-house advisers tend to favor insurance company products.

The average investor isn’t aware of the fact that investment advisers play in different sandboxes, let alone understand the differences between them. Unless it’s explained, which it rarely is, clients aren’t aware of potential limitations of individual retirement-income planning strategies recommended to them by a particular adviser, or of the impact of those limitations on their ability to experience and maintain a successful retirement.
