I have a financial planner looking for an annuity for me. He has come back with some salespeople showing me a National Western Life, NWL Ultra Classic, which is an indexed annuity. It has a spread of 0.2, 75% Participation, and the Guaranteed Income Rider fee of 0.37% (as near as I can figure from their print out illustration. These good rates come with no upfront bonus, which is fine with me.

I am 76 and have $1M in qualified money. If I buy this policy and at the end of the second year I start an income stream at 6.8% of the then account value, which according to their illustration give me $81,500 annually for the rest of my life. That is over 8% on my money. Plus the Account Value never dips below $1M. Thus, if I were to die, my wife would collect this one million dollars, no matter when I die. (She is 12 years younger than I.)

Here is my question: This sound too good to be true. I do understand their illustration shows S&P returns starting from Sept. 25, 1994, which had some very good years following. But even so, the returns will be, astounding, to my mind. Am I missing something? Is this NWL about to go under? I see it has an A rating with AM Best.

Please set my mind at ease, or advise of another company’s plan.
Thanks,
By the way, all your videos are great. And I have learned at lot from you.

My opinion is that you would NEVER want an annuity in your IRA. If, when the time comes, you need a “floor” income then you could annuitize a portion of your IRA.
Until then, let your IRA grow. Costs matter, and there is no way this is a good idea.
